Lesson 04: Home and Community Based Services
Medicaid Home and community-based services provide alternatives to living in facility-based care settings (nursing homes or intermediate care facilities). These programs are called "waviers" and allow participants to have an active role in their health care and to remain in their home or community. Waivers serve people who are elderly, who have developmental disabilites, and who have physical disabilities.
What services are available through waiver programs?
It depends on the program you are enrolled in, but Medicaid waivers can provide nursing care, personal care, adult day care, and respite care.
Who qualifies for a Medicaid waiver program?
In Ohio, Medicaid waivers are programs offered through the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS), the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (ODODD), and the Ohio Department of Aging (ODA).
